Dicey's Song is about a girl named Dicey Tillerman. Dicey is growing up on her grandmother's farm. Dicey lives with two younger brothers, Sammy and James, and a younger sister, Maybeth. Dicey is 13, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She is a tough and independent girl. She has a job at a store owned by Millie, an older woman mentioned a lot in this story. Dicey becomes friends with Wilhemina Smiths, a girl in her English class. Dicey handles her problems very well and on her own.

My story takes place in Maryland. It takes place in modern time. The seasons change from early fall to early winter. The weather in Maryland is chilly, but Dicey goes outdoors a lot. She usually works on the sailboat in the big barn. "Clouds crowded the sky, heavy and dark. The marsh lay under a pale mist, and in the distance, the Bay was dark purple." pg. 57.

The major problem in this story is Dicey wants Gram to open up her past so Dicey can understand why she's always upset. The other major problem is Dicey's mother is mentally ill at the hospital in Boston. Dicey and her siblings never see her. When the doctor in Boston calls, Gram and Dicey travel to see her. The doctor says she may not live much longer.

I would recommend this story to middle school children, or ages 11-14. I like this book because some events that happen to Dicey, sometimes occur to other kids. I recommend this book because it is a young adult fiction book. I enjoyed this story and hope you will read and enjoy this book too.
